Sensitivity is characterized by the presence of burning, stinging, redness, itching and tension sensation on the skin, including the scalp. Depending on the external factors, dried and worn skin, environmental factors (e.g. cold weather, environmental pollution) and preparations applied to the skin trigger the sensitivity. Sensitive scalp is thought to be due to allergic reactions and inflammation.  Sensitivity is a part of the skin problem. It is more common in cases where barrier function is impaired. Sensitivity is thought to be caused by the higher penetration of allergens and irritants, which normally do not cause problems, due to the impaired skin barrier function because of increased Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). The sensitive scalp, i.e. occasionally increased burning-stinging sensation and redness, is quite common all over the world. It is more common in women than in men. They overreact to commonly used topical medicines, cosmetic products, and physical factors such as UV, hot or cold weather, and wind. Psychic stress and hormonal factors can also increase this sensation. This burning and stinging sensation are particularly high in areas where the permeability of the Stratum corneum (SK) is relatively thin. Although the type C myelin-free heat-sensitive fibrils are held responsible for the disturbing sensations in the sensitive scalp, the actual problem has not been identified yet. Furthermore, people with this type of scalp are considered to have a sensitive sensory neural network.  In some patients, the sensation of burning-stinging may be accompanied by vasodilatation and inflammation.
